Humans and Plants
Subject: Science and Social Studies
Grade: 5th

Time: 2days, 1 hour per day
Standards:
* 6. i. Write a report of an investigation that includes conducting test, collecting
data or examining evidence, and drawing conclusions.
Objectives:
* After soing some research and class discussion, the students will understand the
imporatance and ways inw hich humans have used and continue to use plants in their daily lives by reporting to the class their
findings.
Anticipatory Set:
* Teachers and students will discuss the different ways in which our societies use
plants today. Make sure that all of the students contribute with something from theor culture. Discuss whether every cultures
uses the same plants and for the smae purpose or differently.
Materials:
* Internet Access.
* History books and Encyclopedias.
* Paper and Pencils.
* Student's social studies notes.
Procedures:
* Anticipatory Set.
* Teacher will explain to students that humans have used plants all of the
time and that the use of plants depends a lot on the time and
the culture.
* Students will do some research of history about the use of plants.
* Make four groups:
1) One group will start their research
online.
2) The other group will do some research
in the history books.
3) Another group will use the encyclopedia.
4) The last group will use social studies
notes from previous lessons.
* Have groups rotate so that every group has the opportunity to do the same
research from all four resources available.
* Once the research has been done, bring the class together for discussion.
* After discussion have students write a report on the information they have
found.
Assessment:
* Formal: Students written report.
* Informal: Teacher's observation and monotoring throughout the lesson.
Closure:
Students will share their written work to the class. "Today we conclude our
unit on plants, Tomorrow we will be taking a test that will cover everything
we learned about plants."
